At this year’s Annual Representative Assembly on the May long weekend, the Alberta Teachers’ Association will pay tribute to Emilian Groch and Dr Kristopher Wells.
Dr Wells, an assistant professor and director of programs and services at the Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta, will receive the Association’s Public Education Award. This award is presented to an individual who has provided outstanding support to public education in Alberta. Wells fits the bill perfectly.
Wells is committed to raising awareness about sexual minority issues in the community. For example, he chairs the Edmonton Police Service’s Sexual Minorities Liaison Committee and is a founding board member of the Society for Safe and Caring Schools and Communities. Dr Wells’ research and community service work have been recognized with more than 60 awards, including an Alberta Centennial Medal.
Groch will receive the ATA Special Recognition Award, which acknowledges an individual’s extraordinary service to education and the teaching profession.
As chief executive officer of the Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund Board, Groch has faced—and overcome—complex pension administration issues and maintained the ATRF pension promise of working in partnership to secure the pension income of Alberta teachers. A strong and effective leader, he recognizes the importance of building, maintaining and strengthening relationships with plan sponsors, other organizations and ATRF staff, who provide information, assistance and support. Groch’s efforts and commitment to accountability have achieved excellent results for ATRF stakeholders. ❚
